We are at different places in the Everyday Math curriculum, however, both classes are moving forward at a great pace. Ms. McNinch's homebase is finishing up Unit 5 on Fractions, Decimals, and Percents and is getting ready to forward to Unit 6 on graphing and a review of fractions. Mrs. Burton's homebase is about half way through Unit 5 on Fractions Decimals and Percents. We are focusing on fractional parts of a whole, mixed numbers/improper fractions, and converting between fractions, decimals, and percents. Please take time to read the Unit 5 Family Letter or the Unit 6 Family Letter. The letters provide relevant definitions, at home activities, AND answers to the Study Link hw assignments!

Remember to use the resources that are posted on my website. Useful websites are posted as discovered or as needed/requested under important links, and homework is posted almost daily under assignments. Since the school's internet blocker keeps me from updating my site from school, I have found an alternate way to post my daily hw. Follow the link on the assignments page. Students may also check out a SRB (reference book) from the class to use at home as needed.

We finished up our RiverCutters science unit. The students learned alot about how water changes the land. They also learned the importance of writing lab reports. Now we have begun our study of Weather and Climate. Students should be watching the weather report daily. Not only should they be watching for the temperature but also to hear why the weather is the way it is. We have already focused our study on the water cycle and clouds.

So I got bored and went YouTube crazy over break....but now they are here for you to enjoy :)

Pictures from this Year

UPDATED May 21, 2009

Important Links

EOG Practice
Math - Interactive Texas Grade 5 EOG Prep
The following links are from the Texas Education Agency and do not correlate with NC objectives for 5th grade entirely. It is interactive (checks your answers immediately) and is broken down into the NC Goals and Objectives. It is based on old EOG Objectives and students are not responsible for all skills tested here. You may view a current copy of the NC Goals and Objectives at http://www.learnnc.org/scos/2004-MAT/5/ The basic outline of the goals is still the same...questions in Goal 1 test Numbers and Operations, Goal 2 tests Measurement, Goal 3 tests Geometry, Goal 4 tests Data and Probability (Graphs) and Goal 5 questions test Algebra. It is also helpful to practice grade 4 questions for review.

NC EOG Math Prep

Math and Science - This site is from Virginia and similar to the Texas sites provide practice on SOME of the same skills that NC recommends. This is a new concept for many parents (and teachers). This is an article I found with teachers as the intended audience, however, I think it might be helpful to those still struggling with the concept. Everyday Mathematics (K-6) in a Workshop Model: Making the Paradigm Shift for Effective Instruction

9/24/08
Games are an important part of the Everyday Mathematics curriculum. This is an article/interview with a professor about the benefits of using games in a mathematics classroom. Raising Student Achievement with Mathematical Games

9/10/08
Birthday/Holiday Goodies
Voyager Academy is embracing healthy eating. Fast food and soda is not permitted during lunch. I understand that many students would like a treat to celebrate their birthday or to celebrate a holiday. Please contact me when these holidays or celebrations are approaching so we can make sure that we do not have 60 cupcakes in a single day (it happened last year). We also have many birthdays that are back to back. It would be appreciated if a single treat was organized for the class. And as always healthy treats are welcome and preferred over sugar (we've all seen 10-year-olds after cake and icing, try then having class).

8/27/08
FROM THE OFFICE....
-Medical forms must be signed by a doctor. We cannot administer any medication with just a parent note.
-Children should be dropped off and picked up in the car line. No children should be dropped off or picked up in the front office unless they are late coming to school (after 8 am) or leaving early (before 2:30 pm). No child should be signed out after 2:40 pm.
-Please do not call the front office between 2:45-3:15, during car pool there may not be anyone available to answer phone calls.
-Children will not be called out of class (unless being signed out), nor will messages or supplies be delivered to the classroom during instructional time.
-The school needs a free lunch form from EVERY child. If you do not wish to apply, you may put your child's name on the form and sign the "I decline" line.
-A background check will be completed for every volunteer. If a background check was completed last year, it is not necessary to redo it this year.

8/22/08
It was great to meet so many students and parents at the Open House last night. I'm really excited about this upcoming year and I hope you are as well.

8/14/08
WELCOME to my homebase! I look forward to getting to know each one of you.

Jordan Bowen
Brenden Campen
Arianna Ceder
Anthony Council
Benjamin Dow
Stephanie Flores
Reid Hibbard
Emily Holland
Natalie Hollon
Marisa Jannetta
Madison Kujawa
Addison Oliver
Carli Reo
Mackenzie Richards
Austin Rooks
Campbell Shaw
Samantha Sheagley
Hunter Tart
Caleb Trueheart
Bryson Willis
Wyatt Young

8/4/08
-School is beginning soon.
